What do I have to bring?
COGERSA (the company working with us to organise this event) will provide us with vests, gloves and bags to extract the species. However, since the gloves provided break easily, we recommend you bring an extra pair of gardening gloves with you. The gloves will not only protect your hands from the cold, but they will also make it easier for you to pull the plants with your hands. If you have a small rake or weeding tool (the home-gardening type with a small handle), bring them with you. They will be of help when you are extracting the plants. But, do not worry if you do not have gloves or tools, you can also get extract the plants with your hands. Bring an umbrella and rain jacket just in case. Here is a list of what you should bring:
- Gardening gloves
- Small rake or weeding tool (small)
- Umbrella and rain jacket
What we recommend when extracting plants
The plants we are going to extract live right above the ground, which is why you will have to kneel down or sit on the sand to work. These species–with their long, creeping stems–are easy to extract. However, it is important to make sure you do not leave behind too many pieces of plant remains (pieces of stem) in the sand, because these remains can easily form roots and give life to new plants.
Luckily, a lot of volunteers are going to participate and there is not a huge presence of these invasive plants on Vega beach. The most complicated or voluminous species have already been eradicated or will be eradicated with other methods in the coming months.
We will keep our eye on the forecast for the weekend
As many of you have probably already seen, weather conditions for Saturday, 12 November do not look great. We have been evaluating the pros and cons of pushing the activity back to next weekend (the current forecast predicts similar conditions for both weekends) and we have decided to CONTINUE with our original plans. Do not worry, we do not want anyone to suffer and want to make sure everyone has a good time. If conditions are very bad, we will cut the activity short.
Departure point
We have set up two departure points for those that do not have a way to get to Vega beach (there are not many of you) and for those who are willing to give others a ride in their car.
