Chronicle #2: Celebrating Natura 2000 day. Removing capeweed plants from Helgueras (Noja)

The companies AMICA, AMPROS and SERCA received training and volunteered for the LIFE ARCOS project

We celebrated European Natura 2000 Network day on 18 May 2018 with a new volunteer and training event on invasive flora with the LIFE ARCOS Project from the Directorate-General of Natural Environment of the Regional Ministry of Rural Affairs, Fisheries and Food of the Government of Cantabria.

On this occasion, the Cantabrian companies AMICA, AMPROS and SERCA worked to control the cape weeds that was starting to bloom in the tertiary dunes of the Helgueras beach dune system in Noja (within the Santoña, Victoria and Joyel Marshes Natural Park).  After listening to a brief speech from the natural park director, Lourdes González, the three teams from AMICA, AMPROS and SERCA got to work.  30 people worked within plots marked with temporary plastic tape. They collected approximately 300 kg of cape weeds (Arctotheca calendula), and 10 kg of ice plant (Carpobrotus edulis) was also found.  The participants learned to distinguish the characteristics of the cape weeds among other well-preserved and blooming dune plant species such as the sea potato, sea beet, Virginia stock, shore bindweed, European searocket, petty spurge, etc.

The work area included dunes closed years ago to regenerate dune vegetation at Helgueras beach.

Although the area was quite clean, volunteers also collected 2 kg of non-biodegradable bags.

The day concluded with a visit from the Mayor of Noja, Miguel Ángel Ruiz, the city councillor of the environment, Javier Martín, and two environmental technicians from the City Hall of Noja, Silvia Ochoa y Ludovico de Vega, who visited the volunteer area.

Finally, the Cantabrian Network for Rural Development collected all the plants and garbage.

Participants received a commemorative LIFE ARCOS ceramic glass made in a Ceramics Workshop at the El Dueso Penitentiary in its NACAR program (Nature and Prison).

The Directorate-General of Natural Environment would like to thank volunteers for their participation. Everyone learned something new about the environment and played their part in restoring vulnerable ecosystems: the dune systems of Cantabria.

Excited to celebrate Natura 2000 day in May 2018

We couldn’t wait any longer to tell you about European Natura 2000 Network Day! We could not wait any longer to tell you about this day, because are preparing something really interesting to share with you all.

On 21 May, Europe celebrates the creation of Natura 2000 Network (the largest network of protected areas in the world) Day and the Habitats Directive publication, which legally protects species and habitats in this network.

Like every year, the LIFE+ARCOS project will form part of the activities that celebrate this special nature conservation day.

On 19 and 20 May, we’re hosting various communication sessions and volunteer activities within different Asturian (Barayo beach, between Navia and Valdés), Cantabrian and Basque dune systems.

Please keep an eye on our website and social media profiles: we’ll post more information about how you can join our efforts at various points on the Cantabrian coast.

25 anniversary of EU LIFE Programme. Location: INDUROT, Investigation Building, Mieres Universitary Campus.

Today, 17th May, the INDUROT (Institute of Natural Resources and Territorial Planning, Research Building, Mieres University Campus) is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the LIFE Programme. The event will cover the importance of this programme and diverse projects that have been developed from the University of Oviedo within this European funding framework.

In 2017, the LIFE Programme and the Habitats Directive are celebrating their 25th anniversary, both passed on 21st May 1992.  To acknowledge the important role of this programme in conserving European natural heritage, the European Commission and the European Parliament, the Council and the Committee of the Regions, will officially declare the 21st May as the “European Natura 2000 Day”.  INDUROT wants to mark this anniversary by implementing this information day on 17th May, which will address the way that this financial instrument has acted to co-fund environmental conservation actions, to study ways of mitigating climate change, and to propose new solutions to treating contaminated ground. The day will have a particular focus on analysing advances made by the LIFE+ARCOS project, and on highlighting the importance of conservation works on coastal dune systems, the target of this project’s action along the entire Cantabrian coastline. It will also summarise the objectives and results of the 2011 LIFE+IDARTS and TREMEDAL projects.

The programme can be downloaded here , summarised below:

    Last minute note

[box type=»warning»] WE HAVE CLOSED THE REGISTRATION FORM[/box] [box type=»info»]

THANK YOU ALL FOR PARTICIPATING. WE WILL CONTINUE TO ORGANISE MORE EVENTS TO CONSERVE THE CANTABRIAN DUNES. STAY TUNED[/box]

    A2-VERDICIO

On Saturday 21st May 2016 the Life+ARCOS team invites you to join us to carry out volunteering action to remove some invasive exotic species on the Verdicio Beach (Luanco, Asturias), a protected space that is included within the Cabo Busto-Luanco Special Area of Conservation (SAC ES1200055), and therefore is part of the Network of Protected Spaces included in the Natura 2000 Network.

If you do not live in Asturias, Life+ARCOS is also holding other activities on the same day in Cantabria and in the Basque Country. Stay tuned to our website where we will post more information shortly.

    What will we be doing?

The idea is to be able to spend a Saturday in a natural protected space, and to help improve its state of conservation, with the assistance of citizen participation. Various members of the Life+ARCOS team will be present in Verdicio, T. E. Díaz, Álvaro Bueno, Nacho Felpete, Elena Fernández and other people. We will talk about the space and will give you instructions on how to remove some particularly problematic invasive species that are tricky to remove manually.

    How long will it last?

The plan is for everyone interested in participating to already be in Verdicio by 11:00 am. Our intention is to close the day by around 3 pm, so that participants can either stay to eat or return home with no problem.

    Schedule: 11:00 to 15:00

    How can I take part?

Fill out this registration form so you will be covered by the insurance that we take out with the University of Oviedo. It is essential for us to have the names of participants and their national identity document. In Verdicio we will ask you to sign a participation sheet to make sure our list coincides.

Use the form fields to give any additional information such as if you can share a car to reach the location, for example, or if you will be accompanied by children, and above all: an e-mail address or telephone number so we can contact you.

Contact us with any queries on the following contact page. We will be delighted to help.

Over the coming days we will publish more information with more details.

    TAKE PART!

  • European Natura 2000 Day, the countdown begins.

European Natura 2000 Day, the countdown begins.

    natura-200day

At ARCOS+LIFE we want to celebrate the European Natura 2000 Day, which is held on 21st May across Europe.

We are already organising some activities and would love you to take part in them to celebrate this day with us. Keep an eye on our facebook page and our twitter account to receive the latest news. In AsturiasCantabria and the Basque Country, where LIFE+ARCOS is participating in the conservation of dune ecosystems, we will hold invasive species removal campaigns and talks on the chosen dunes, allowing us to gauge a deeper understanding of the way these fragile ecosystems work, and to witness the problem of invasive exotic species first hand.

We are also going to open a photo competition that will award the best images of dune species, with prizes of books and t-shirts. We will publish the competition rules on our facebook page.

In the meantime, you are welcome to take part in the campaign promoted by the http://www.natura2000day.eu/ page, by sending a photo with the symbol of a butterfly made with your hands, as this video explains.

You can publish your photos using the #natura2000day hashtag, or upload them onto the website http://www.natura2000day.eu/sube-tu-foto/. If you use Twitter, include the #arcoslifeproject hashtag or @InfoArcoslife so we can follow you.

We hope to see you there!
