HABITATS SELECTED FOR THE PROJECT
The habitats that will be benefited directly from project actions are the following:
2130* Fixed coastal dunes with herbaceous vegetation grey dunes
Represent the inner and more stable dunes within the complex beach-dune
2120 Shifting dunes along the shoreline with Ammophila arenaria white dunes
These constitute the second dune cord.
2110 Embryonic shifting dunes
They exist in a highly dynamic state and are dependent on the continued operation of physical processes at the dune/beach interface.
1210 Annual vegetation of drift lines
Dominated by annual plant communities where the sea-rocket (Cakile maritime) is commom
91E0* Alluvial forests with Alnus glutinosa and Fraxinus excelsior
They are in the riverbanks that flow into dune systems or in estuaries.
DUNE HABITATS IN THE CANTABRIAN COAST
Dunes and beaches are small and scarce in the Cantabrian Coast, where cliffs dominate the landscape. These ecosystems do not show, in general terms, an adequate level of development, which is even made worse by high anthropogenic pressure, especially severe during the summer period.
These conditions together with the fragility of dune habitats, which are characterized by high dynamism responsible for their origin and evolution, would explain the importance of taking urgent measures that contribute to reach an acceptable conservation status for these ecosystems. This urgency is also linked to the fact that many of these habitats are present in Sites of Community Interest (SCIs) which are protected by the European, Spanish or Regional legislation.
Loss of biodiversity is the main result of disturbance on dune habitats, mainly driven by human activity and by destructive episodes including storms and important river floods. These habitats have lost, decreased or altered their natural populations and characteristic species. As a consequence, many of these species which are exclusive to these habitats have been included in red lists, Regional catalogues of threatened flora, National Catalogue and in the Annexes of the Habitats Directive as a mechanism to give protection to the ecosystem and species there occurring.
The LIFE programme is the EU’s funding instrument for the environment and climate action. The general objective of LIFE is to contribute to the implementation, updating and development of EU environmental and climate policy and legislation by co-financing projects with European added value.
LIFE began in 1992 and to date there have been four complete phases of the programme (LIFE I: 1992-1995, LIFE II: 1996-1999, LIFE III: 2000-2006 and LIFE+: 2007-2013). During this period, LIFE has co-financed some 4171 projects across the EU, contributing approximately €3.1 billion to the protection of the environment.
